Deprivation Study
In the years following 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq by the United States, the international community engaged in a rigorous debate regarding torture. Central to the debate was the question, what constitutes torture? In the minutia of definitions and practices, the seemingly innocuous practice of sleep deprivation emerged to the forefront of many media discussions. In this work, Jorgensen sits in front of the camera for 24 hours photographing on every half hour mark. The artist becomes captive to the camera. Public performance.
